What can I put near my bird feeders to keep squirrels away?

Is there something I can plant, or some other chemical I can put out near my bird feeders to keep squirrels away?

We have a lot of squirrels around here, and I have had several bird feeders ruined by these long-tailed monsters.

(I hate squirrels. Whenever I see one of those things run over in the road, I think, ';good.'; The only reason why people don't treat them like rats is because of those long tails. Those tails are their PR.)

So, any suggestions? Plants or chemicals that are harmless to birds, but will frighten squirrels away? What can I put near my bird feeders to keep squirrels away?
Wow. I totally disagree.

I think you should feed the squirrels, too. If you use squirrel guards and baffles they will find other food - like eggs, fledglings and unsuspecting hens sitting on nests.

I'd rather feed them, then have them eating the birds.

There are squirrel proof feeders and squirrel feeders available - some of them are even entertaining for humans.

Killing squirrels is pointless. New ones will move in within days. What can I put near my bird feeders to keep squirrels away?
One thing you can do is put a mesh over your bird feeder. That will work well if you have a platform feeder. You can also buy squirrel proof feeders. Many online sites sell them. Some people also use grease on the pole so the squirrel slides down and can't get up on the feeder. Another option is to give the squirrels their own food so they don't eat the seeds. There are also some sprays you can buy online that deter squirrels but don't deter or hurt birds. Hope at least one of those things I mentioned helps you out.
My dad hates squirrels too for the same reason so he put a big circle of sheet metal on the bottom and top of his feeders. He's been doing this for several years and the squirrels haven't figured it out yet.

Do you play tricks on the squirrels when they get into the bird feeders?

My neigbor and I glued English Walnuts around the feeder in a circle and then took video of the squirrels trying to run away with them.Do you play tricks on the squirrels when they get into the bird feeders?
here's a trick I would like to play on the squirrels in my yard.

Hey, that's funny! Publish it to the web so we can see it!

We don't have any bird feeders, but when squirrels come by our yard to bury their treasures, we (my brothers and I) usually run out after it, trying to shoot it with airsoft guns. We've hit it a few times but it comes back even more often now. Stupid squirrel.
I put cayenne on the seeds, doesn't bother the birds but the squirrels don't like it.
No. If they are willing to go through all that trouble to ge a meal, why bother them.

i used to get upset but ,. what the heck, they get hungry too.
my cats kill squirrels..........my cats are so mean.

the little fuzzy tailed rats leave little or nothing for the birds plus they chew holes in my seed storage bins. any help you can give will be deeply appreciated.I have started a bird sanctuary in my backyard but now the squirrels have discovered my feeders....?
We buy bullets without any powder (or whatever is used in them). We shoot the little buggers. (We have pecan trees in our back yard and the little buggers bite into them just enough to ruin them). The cats next door enjoy eating their brains.I have started a bird sanctuary in my backyard but now the squirrels have discovered my feeders....?
Put feeders on the tops of poles away from trees so the squirrels can't climb to get to them. Keep the seed in metal containers with tops that can't be opened by squirrels.
There are a variety of products sold for squirrel deterrence. Put the feeders on poles and put a ';squirrel guard'; on the pole...it is like an inverted dish that makes it hard for them to climb the pole. Metal trash cans with lids for seed storage.

Also consider putting up some squirrel feeders on the trees...if you make it a hassle for them to eat the bird food AND provide them with their own food supply problem solved...and you'll have more friends to entertain you in your yard.
There is no way to completely stop these tree rats but squirrel proof bird feeders do a good job. They sell them at Home Depot
put your bird feeders on poles away from anything a squirrel can jump from. if the squirrels decide to climb up the pole, put vaseline on it. sounds silly, but it works.

This is from Birds and Blooms Mag. Simply drill a hole in bottom of a plastic planter and slip it on the pole top-down below the feeder. Then sit back and watch as the squirrels try to climb the pole. If you can find this magazine their are quite a few other ideas to try.Metal pole with bird feeders on it..how to keep squirrels from climbing up and eating all food?
they make a device i'm not sure what it is called but it looks like the thing they put on a dog when it has wound to keep it from chewing on the bandages it acts as a obstacle they can't get around to get to the bird feeders.
over the birder feeder drill a hole in a pie pan and put it through the string over the feeder. when the squirrel jumps on it it wiil fall of.
they make squirrle baffles. they are these large metal or plastic funnel looking things that go around a bird feeder pole that keeps them from climbing to the top. about 20 bucks or less. depending..

How can i keep squirrels and crows out of my bird feeders?

I have to agree with the first poster. Unfortunately, after trying for MANY years, I have never found a Squirrel proof feeder. Even the ones that have claimed to figure it out. My husband and I have spent lots of $$$ on these feeders and we finally just gave up, took them down and put up a Squirrel feeder! LOL. They love it. We are much less frustrated now. And, we still get many birds in our garden all year long! Woodpeckers, Doves, Hummingbirds, Robins, Blue Jays, Sparrows not to mention an Owl from our neighbors barn and a resident Hawk.

We've never had a problem with Crows in our feeders so I can't advise you on that. How can i keep squirrels and crows out of my bird feeders?
    Glenda,

Having experience with this, I can only advise two ways and neither is without cost. First invest in birdfeeders that have small opening so that the smaller birds have to enter the feeder to get to the seeds. Secondly mount your bird feeder on a narrow round (slippery) metal pole at least 8 feet long. Be sure you are at least 10 feet from the nearest tree branch. Depending on the material you may have to keep the pole greased. This means crows can't get to the seed and squirrels can get to the feeder and destroy it. We live in the country and have more than enough crows and squirrels. The only advantage is that there is a hunting season on both culprits. Don't waste your money on so called squirrel proof feeders, they will eventually destroy them and get what they want. Good Luck. How can i keep squirrels and crows out of my bird feeders?
Boy, if you find out let me know. There are plenty of expensive feeders that claim to be squirrel proof. There are hints on how to do this on DIY sites. But, in the end, they just keep hogging that food.
Home Depot has a squirrel proof bird feeder. And as far as the crows go, get feeders that are to little for the crow to get their beak into.
buy a pellet gun and kill em

If the feeder is on a pole you can try to to install a metal cone under the feeder and that will keep the squirrels away. They also make a feeder that you can set the perch to close off the food supply off if something heavier than a bird gets on it. Just do a google search for squirrel proof bird feeders and you will find a place to purchase them.Keeping squirrels out of bird feeders...?
Good luck with that. a hungry squirrel is a very determined and resourceful creature. I have seen them defeat every obstacle ever sold in stores although they devices do slow them down considerably

There are specially designed bird feeders which are supposed to be 'squirrel-proof'.

I would check out a local hardware store or Lee Valley.

I had a landlady who kept working at squirrel proofing her bird feeders. Her systems worked for about 24 hours, each. I'd swear the squirrels would go back to their hole and get to the drafting board to design a system to outsmart her.

I guess you have to just be one step ahead of them. I think one system I have seen has a cover that will tip the squirrel off and away from the feeder.
Im from Texas its called a SHOTGUN

Why do squirrels eat all of the food in bird feeders?

Food good, yum... ;)Why do squirrels eat all of the food in bird feeders?
They are just greedy, i feed them as well by throwing peanuts and biscuits on the ground , they will finish it and still go for the feeders. We have a long pole that you can buy from Garden centres and then fit different size hooks to hang the feeders on, we have one and we smeared the pole with Vaseline, grease etc and now the squirrells cannot get to the feeders, they slip off, quite funny to watch.:))Why do squirrels eat all of the food in bird feeders?
    quite simply because they can!

  • Squirrels at the bird feeders?

I had two bird feeders hanging from a fir tree in front of my apartment. I really enjoy watching the birds. Needless to say, a couple of squirrels liked the situation. One feeder pretty much got destroyed. I enjoy the antics of the squirrels and my husband hates their destructive nature and chases them away. I had to throw out the smaller feeder because it got so damaged. He took the second feeder down because the squirrels kept going for it. Any ideas? I don't want to harm the squirrels. Thanks!Squirrels at the bird feeders?
Squirrels are curious and inventive when it come to figuring out ways to get to a bird feeder. The only way to beat them is to place the bird feeder on top of a polished metal pole with a blocking collar at least 24 inches wide just below the feeder. You then have to grease the pole to make it extra slippery so the squirrels can't get up the pole and gain enough traction to jump to the edge of the collar and make their way around it. You also have to maintain it in its greased and polished state. It is almost as much fun to watch the squirrels try and get up the pole and around the collar as it is to watch the birds feeding.

Good luck.Squirrels at the bird feeders?
You have to use squirrel proof feeders.

You can also live trap them and take them to the park.

I had the same problem and they chewed up everything. Feeders, trash can etc.

had to trap and move them.
Get a polished metal pole with a hook at the top to hang it from that's less than 3/8 inch diameter and put it away from all trees.
There are bird feeders that close off the bird seed feed tray when a squirrel stands on it. The squirrel's weight closes it off. I don't know where to get them, but I'm sure with searching around you can find one.
My gray squirrels eat the seeds off the ground. They are well mannered and not destructive at all. But oh, those nasty red squirrels. They are into everything and they're very mean tempered.

So here's my remedy -- works for me, but then I'm a country farm girl.

Take one BB gun. Load BBs. Aim at squirrel while it's trying to destroy bird feeder. FIRE right into mid-section of squirrel's body!

You will not kill the squirrel, but it does sting them quite badly. And they will not return to the scene of the crime!

Addition: There is no such thing as a ';squirrel proof feeders.'; For all those recommending the kind that close down or dump when a heavy squirrel stands on them, the squirrels soon figure this out and then hang upside down and empty the feeders that way!
Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and ask them for the bird feeders that have a very skinny pole. They are ideal because the birds can still enjoy the feeders but the squirrels won't be able to get to it because they can't climb the pole.
you should buy a squirrel proof feeder and/or buy special squirrel chilli formula stuff that u mix with the food...it's what i do!
I have a couple of families of grey squirrels in my back garden and I have yet to find a ';squirrel proof'; bird feeder that does what it says on the packet.

My solution is to make bird feeders from 2 litre plastic drinks bottles and not care if they get trashed.
Try getting a statue of a larger animal. We use an owl. But, don't be fooled...the squirrels are clever. We have to move the owl around once in a while, or the squirrels get brave. Just be sure to put it on the ground, so you don't scare the birds, too.
Birds and mammals have one difference which can be exploited .. Birds are unable to taste the spicy hotness of food, whereas mammals taste the heat. Therefore many times you can solve your problems by putting hot pepper powder into the bird seed. This can be found at some farm supply stores.

The squirrels should quickly learn that your food is too ';flamin' Hot'; for them, whereas birds actually enjoy hot peppers and pepper seeds.

    You can sometimes even use the powder as seasoning in your own food , assuming you like ';Hot Stuff!';

E-mail me for more sources of cayenne powder.
Squirrels may also help themselves to the contents of bird feeders, often not merely feeding, but carrying away the food to their hoard. There are various anti-squirrel devices available to thwart attempts by squirrels to raid bird feeders. Several manufacturers produce feeders with perches that collapse under the weight of anything heavier than a bird, or that use battery power to shock an intruder lightly or spin the perching area to fling it off.

Sometimes the placement of a separate and isolated squirrel feeder is the best way to keep squirrels away from bird feeders. Squirrel feeders typically offer a whole dried cob of corn, often at the top of a rotating stick to add a bit of amusement to their antics.
You'll probably just have to buy a ';squirrel proof'; feeder. The squirrel will still be able to get to the food, but at least it'll be more entertaining to watch them do it.
I know this may sound stupid but what about some kind of repellent? Nothing that would harm the birds but some type of food or obstacle that they cannot stand.
We bought a bird feeder that spins when there is too much weight on it (i.e. squirrels or fat birds) at our local ACE hardware

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to keep squirrels out of bird feeders?

My grandmother sits at the window and squirts them with vinegar out of an old Windex bottle. She fill it with vinegar and squirts them when they climb up to the bird feeders. She also sprinkles some seed on the ground when she fills the feeders to deter them from climbing up at all. She also uses the Vaseline on the poles trick. Someone already mentioned that but my Gram says it's very entertaining to watch them slide back down!!!Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to keep squirrels out of bird feeders?
my dad put a flat tray on a long pole, and it worked for a while but now they jump *down* onto it from surrounding things.

he also likes to just sprinkle bird-seed down the driveway thinly all over the place. this prevents birds from fighting over one or 2 piles (or one feeder) and squirrels have to work hard to gather up all the spilled seed so he birds get more seeds.

he also sits there throwing rags at the squirrels, but that sort of thing is for old people!

(i'll tell him about the vasiline trick, lol!)Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to keep squirrels out of bird feeders?
If you have the slender pole that looks like a candy cane with the feeder at the end of the hook....there are baffles that you can add to the pole so the squirrel can't get up the pole....and make sure the feeder is at least 6 ft from the ground......

there is also feeders that have an opening of birds to sit on but when something as heave as a squirrel sits on it it closes and they can't ge the seeds....
The best method of Grey Squirrel control is the Kania Trap 2000. It is effective, humane kill, no re-locating. Place the trap 5-7 feet above the ground on a tree trunk, under eves, or in an attic away from children and non- target species. Best bait is peanut butter, or nuts in their shells.
i had the same problem. The solution is very simple. If it is a ground mounted feeder, make a pyramid shaped box with no bottom and somehow keep it high on the pole. This doesnt allow squirrels to climb up the feeder. If its a feeder hanging from a tree, try using a spray repellent
They actually have special bird feeders to keep squirrels out. My in-laws have one. Otherwise, try to hang to bird feeder far out on a limb with a long string attachment. Makes it harder for the squirrels to get to it. Good luck!
I know a lady who put Vasaline on the birdfeeder pole and the squirrels can climb it. I have used a spray at the base, but it has to be put on after it rains.
    A 22. lol

No, seriously, if there is an answer, I would like to know. Those pesky, things chew through anything. If they weren't so cute!!
they make these dome shaped things that you put over the feeder. im sure you can buy them at lowes or home depot

someone had told me to put a slinky on the pole that my bird feeder sits on and the squirrels can't get up there.Do Slinky's really work on bird feeders to keep the squirrels off of them?
My father uses valalene. they cannot climb it, they slide off it and cannot figure out how to work it. It doesn't wash off and they don't like the grease on their fir or paws. He hasn't had a problem since....even on the string to attach them to the tree! It is inexpensive and worth a shot.

    Good luck

I personally have a squirrel proof feeder. Squirrels get on it they are too heavy and it closes. Anywhere they are on it.Do Slinky's really work on bird feeders to keep the squirrels off of them?
What is wrong with squirrels? Who feeds them?
Put a can baffle on your pole and move the pole away from anything that the squirrel can jump from to get to your feeder.

I've never heard of using Slinkies, but I'll bet the squirrels would find a way around them. They're pretty crafty.
im sure the squirrel would just jump or crawl past them.

move the feeder away from any over hanging trees, and put some 2ft wide aluminimum sheeting around the pole - it will be too slippery for the squirrels to climb up, and too wide for them to jump past.

    .
the squirrells learn how to slinky it is such a cool trick!
I have never heard of this before, but you risk the squirrel getting caught up in the slinky and dying which is ok if you dont care about squirrels. We used to oil the pole, it makes it too slippery to climb.

The other option is some sort of baffle, typically a downward facing dish, cone or array of rods arrangement.

Placing the pole inside a larger plastic pipe may make it harder for them to climb, a really smooth surface may defeat them, as they can generally cling to anything with a texture, or anything they can get a grip around.
cover the ple with a smooth peice of plastic so when they tri to climb they slip.

You need to make it so the squirrels can't reach the feeder, since they'll push it out of metal suet holders and destroy wooden ones to get at it.

That means hanging the feeder from something inaccessible to squirrels. A shepherd's crook with a baffle works. If you don't mind renewing it constantly, so does a shepherd's crook with a film of Vaseline. (It won't hurt the squirrel to get it on its paws or fur as it tries to climb.)

How to avoid squirrels off a bird feeder?

This is what we did at my ex-boyfriend's house after consulting with the owners of our local wild birds store. It really worked.

We mounted the bird feeder on a pole away from the trees so that the squirrels couldn't jump from above onto the feeder. Then we put a squirrel baffle beneath the feeder on the pole so that the squirrels couldn't climb up the pole to the feeder from below. There are baffles that look like a cylinder, but we used the kind that looks like a wide flat cone. The squirrels tried to climb up the pole but couldn't get over the lip of the baffle to resume climbing the pole from the other side. We mounted the feeder about 5 feet off the ground and the baffle below that but no lower than 4 feet.

You can also get the special feeders where there is a special weighted perch. The birds are light enough not to set off the lever, but the squirrels are heavy enough to depress the lever and close off the opening to the seed. We found our way above cheaper and more effective. We had a simple platform feeder with a roof to keep the seed dry. You could combine the special feeder with the baffle if your yard is heavily wooded. How to avoid squirrels off a bird feeder?

I agree with the former poster -- there are squirrel-proof feeders; however, if this is impractical -- try a solution called ';Tangle foot'; which will keep rodent/squirrels/etc from crawling onto your feeder because the substance is so 'sticky'. The product is cheap -- and def. worth a try -- check it out, it probably will be the answer to your solution.

Tune in for the squirrel stew
my feeders are all on poles, we rubbed them with vasaline, also had fun watching the squirrels try to climb them, they can't.

There are special ';squirrel proof'; bird feeders available, the best online source I know of being http://www.thebirdtable.co.uk/
mix red peeper with the food and give it to them. Then they will stop coming!!
There are some well-designed feeders out there that squirrels cannot get into. When they land on them, their weight ';closes'; the feeder. The only way to ';insure'; that they won't keep working at getting in is to put the feeder in a totally open area where the squirrels cannot jump DOWN onto it.

Otherwise, as long as you feed the birds, you're providing food for the squirrels. They'll never stop coming.

Apply two or three rings of double-sided tape near the bottom of the pole or tree.
They make plastic things for that and they sell them everywhere. Like Walmart, hardware stores, etc.. Or you could just make your own by cutting out a circle of heavy plastic- like the bottom of a cheap pail, and putting it on the feeder post under the feeder. It makes the squirrel fall down.

I had this problem at my cabin in Colorado! The only thing that ever worked was to move the feeders to a slick location (such as a metal pole) or to another inacessible place (such as a long rope WAY far out on a limb). I also limited the openings on the feeders (w/ toothpicks), (no, not to poke them), so as to make it to where you REALLY needed a BEAK to reach the food. ALSO, (%26amp; I believe that this was the key to success) I provided a little house that was just FOR the sqirrels (filled w/ the same bird food. REALLY, REALLY worked!!!! (plus, I'm sure it made them feel special %26amp; loved.) If you can't beat them-join them! :)
we had this same problem, except with our chickens getting ontop of feeders. so we took a terricota round planter base, cut a small circle in the middle, and placed it upside down on the ';attatchment'; of the freeder. you may want to attatch a rope and tie a knot below the terricota planter base. the object of this is that when weight is applied to it (from squirrels sitting on top) it will tip. hopefully that wasnt too confusing ;)

If you want squirrels to stop eating your wildbird seed simply add Cheyenne pepper to it. Enough to coat all the seed. I used this technique back in Texas about 1-2 table spoons per cup and tossed or shook to coat. Birds will not be affected as they have less taste buds but the squirrels will not eat it as they can not tolerate the heat/taste..It works and I didn't think it would either but once I noticed the squirrels were killing off baby birds in order to eat the seed I gave it a try.
Buy them their own squirrel food, and put it a ways away

from the bird feeder,it must never be empty, so it will

distract them from going up the bird feeder. Really, there

might not be anything that can detour Squirrels from food

anywhere. My suggestions is feed them.

Help, my bird feeders have been taken over by squirrels. How can I keep them out?

One feeder is standing on a pole and up they climb to get to the feeder. Have already tried WD-40 and vaseline on the pole. Didn't work. The other one is hanging from a branch in a tree and they climb the tree, walk on the branch and down the feeder to eat. Bird seed is costly and they are driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance.Help, my bird feeders have been taken over by squirrels. How can I keep them out?
put red pepper into the bird feeder onto the seed

the birds actually like the pepper taste and the squirrels hate it.

there is a product called squirrel-off..... all it is - red peppers crushed.

don't get it in your eyes.Help, my bird feeders have been taken over by squirrels. How can I keep them out?
You can purchase a metal baffle and attach it high enough from the ground so that they can not jump over it. Also have the feeder far enough away from a tree or some other thing that they can jump from.
Ah, one of the eternal frustrations of gardening. All I can tell you is that there are more than a few squirrel-busting devices available at most garden and feed stores; some work better than others.

Personally I prefer to just shoot the little vermin, but most people are nicer than that.
my cousin used to play drums and he broke a cymbal at a gig (I have no idea how he managed that), my grandfather used it over top of his bird feeder.

It was a bit larger than the top of the bird feeder and it was high enough up the bird feeder tether that the cymbal wasn't directly on top of the feeder but it was low enough so that it kept the squirrels off of the bird feeder, it was also wide enough that when the squirrel went to the edge of the cymbal to try to get to the seeds, he'd fall off.

The downside of this was the squirrels then worked out another way to get at the bird seed. They would leap at the feeder and try to catch on it and swing until they spilled the birdseed on the ground. They would have been able to eat the seed too if the doves didn't run them off. That's the only time I've ever seen 3 birds puff their bodies out, spread their wings and walk menacingly towards a mammal. It was really quite amusing.

anyway, Pop got tired of fighting the squirrels and bought a squirrel trapeze and put it in another part of the yard. The squirrels starting playing on that and eating the suet he left for them there and they left the bird feeder alone.
    shoot them or google it

PRODUCT,,, HOT SAUCE OR HOT PEPPER SEEDS,,, OR AS STATED ABOVE SQUIRRELL PROOF FEEDERS, THEY DO HAVE THEM AND THE OTHER IDEA IS TO HAVE THE FEEDER ON A POLE AND A BIG ROUND PIECE OF PLEXIGLASS UNDER IT LARGE ENOUGH SO THEY CANT REACH AROUND OR JUMP UP TO... FASTEN WITH RUBBER WITH HOSE CLAMPS AND YOU CAN MAKE IT ROUND OR SQUARE WITH A LINE TO PUT IT ON AND JUST RIVIT IT CLOSED AND ITS SQUIRREL PROOF, I DID IT FOR TEN YEARS,, THE POLE WAS A HOLLOW PIPE TWO INCH AND THE BIRD FEEDER HAD A ONE INCH POLE ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM SO IT CAME OFF AND ON EASILY TO CLEAN AND IN SUMMER PUT ON A THREE POLE PLANT HANGER. SO IT JUST WONT BE A POLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE YARD.. AND KEEP IT FAR ENOUGH FROM A WIRE OR HOUSE OR ANYTHING THEY CAN JUMP FROM AND THEY CAN JUMP FAR.... AND BY THE WAY IT LASTED FOR TEN YEARS ONLY,, I GOT A DIVORCE AND MOVED AWAY, SO GOOD LUCK THERE :%26gt; JSquirrels won't leave the bird feeders alone. What's the most effective way to stop them?
Get a squirrel proof feeder. or but squirrel food and feed them too. We give our squirrels food so now they dont bug the birds, plus they are really cute!
There is an attachment you slide up the bird feeder pole(providing you have a bird feeder on a pole)

Its metal and looks like an umbrella, they can climb the pole but the pole guard doesn't let them get to the bird food.

I have one, my parents do. It works great, you can get them at wal-mart.

there is a bird feeder that is built so that it will hold the weight of the bird but not anything heavier. any other animal will cause the wholes where there is access to food to close. i'm not sure the name of the brand but our Walmart carries it. i think specialty pet stores do to.How can you keep squirrels out of bird feeders?

As other posters mention, you will probably have to feed the squirrels. I have a squirrel feeder http://www.flickr.com/photos/21211516@N0鈥?/a> in the far corner of my yard. I keep it full of black-oil sunflower seeds, and the only time the squirrels bother my bird feeders is when their own feeder is empty.

This will not attract more squirrels. Squirrels are territorial, and will not let other squirrel families into their territory.

Feeding the little pests is more effective than dogs, cats, repellents, barbed wire, shotguns, slingshots, and yelling at them. You may however want to purchase a squirrel baffle http://www.flickr.com/photos/sundebsun/1鈥?/a> (not my image, but a good example) to keep them away. Just make sure they can't climb a nearby tree and leap into the birdfeeder.
That's an easy one put your bird seed out and sprinkle some cayenne pepper in it. The birds will not care they don't smell or taste very well but it will light up the squirrels and they will leave it alone any pepper will work.

Squirrels get hungry too,and they don't know the feed is just for the birds. I always leave seed and peanuts for the squirrels and they leave the bird feeders alone.

It's a lost cause trying to just feed the birds.
Wire two wire hanging baskets together to forn a sperical cage around the bird feeder - birds can access it - squirrels can't.

Will squirrels get into hummingbird feeders?

I am thinking about having some hummingbird feeders. I don't want to have to deal with squirrels getting into it all the time. does anyone know anything about this? Will squirrels get into hummingbird feeders?
I am looking out into my backyard watching a squirrel drink out of my hummingbird feeder right now!!!

I think if they get hungry enough, nothing is sacred! I had a family of squirrels tear up the cushions off my patio set to use in building their nest...

Sorry for the bad news! Will squirrels get into hummingbird feeders?
I had to quit buying feeders cuz the squirrels chewed up and broke 4 of them, and also tore up all my seed feeders too, and just wasted it. All i can have is finch feed in my feeder cuz they don't like that. Maybe if you got the real small ones that hang from a porch roof, it'll work.
I have had Hummingbird feeders before, and Squirrels never bothered with them. Try getting one that sticks to the window, Just stick it high up so the Squirrels can't reach it. But I don't really think Squirrels like sugar water.
I wouldn't think that squirrels would be interested in sugar water that is colored with food coloring. Squirrels like nuts and seeds. They usually get into your bird feeders because there are sunflower seeds in the seed mix.
Squirrels have no interest in sugar water mixtures only bird seed. Your hummingbirds would be safe from them.

    Squirrels at my feeder?

Lately i've been seeing many squirrels at my bird feeders. After trying various techniques of trying to be rid of them and failing. I went and bought a pellet gun (i don't have a weapon permit so i bought one with a fps of 495) would that be enough power to ethicaly do away with thos buggers?Squirrels at my feeder?
no, it is recommended you use a .177 at over 900 fps or a .22 at over 750 fps for airrifles for dispatching small game.

    Squirrels are rugged buggers.

Also, this won't change your problem. Unless you hunt the entire neighborhood and kill enough squirrles to put a serious dent in the population (say 200 individuals) you kill a squirrel today, a different squirrel will move into his territory and be eating at the feeder again in a day or three.

Heck, even if you killed enough squirrels to drop the population to half of what it was in a 5 mile radius, more food for the survivors would mean more baby squirrels living to adulthood, and you'd be right back where you started next spring.Squirrels at my feeder?
I've blasted a few squirrels back in the day with a pellet gun. I took one out with a very lucky shot at about 40 feet, running across a branch. Not sure of the fps of my air rifle, its an old one, at least 30 years old, the kind where you break the barrel in half once to load the pellet and that also fills it with air, but it is powerful enough to kill the things.

Now, I try to do the more humane thing and trap them with a Havahart trap. I drop them off a few miles away in a large park.
There are 2 ways of avoiding squirrels, the more common way, get feeders that they can't get in, or some people just put corn cobs and such in accessable locations, so they can just eat there instead.

as for an air rifle, that 495 fps would probably just scare them at a distance, and close enough to kill, you probably would scare them away.

You might want to consider a slingshot. you can get the ammo for free (stones) and you can kill small game fairly easily if you practice a little.
You'll have to hit them in the head. I've got the same problem. I have a 600fps pellet gun. I should have purchased the 580fps gun with a rifled barrel. If your pellet gun doesn't have a rifled barrel, its really tough to hit them in the head.

The gun I have has a 4x scope. I've zeroed the scope (as best I can) in my basement at 25 yards. Groupings are 2 inches. But even at 600 fps, a pellet is VERY suceptable to wind. I don't have ballistics charts on the rifle, but bullet drop and energy loss is significant as well if you shoot beyond 25 yards.

I took the screens out of a couple windows so I can shoot the varmits from inside the house. It provides good cover and contains the noise.

I have considered a crossbow instead. Less noise than an air rifle and less intimidating if the neighbors see you.
just put up some corn cobs around your place they should leave the bird food alone that's the only way if you don't want to kill them.
No you need at least 600 fps to kill a squirrel.
a few shots will convince them

Like I have been told when you feed birds you feed all the wildlife out there. I invested in a few squirrel feeders. They are a bit on the costly side but work well. One is a chair that holds corn on the cob and the other is a little house like thing that holds peanuts in the shell and they have to work to get them out. Cute to watch to. Also I have learned to throw a bunch of sunflower seeds under bird feeders so the squirrels will eat those and let the birds eat at the feeders. They also like rodent chow that you can buy and put through your yard. Birds don't eat this so the squirrels look through yard and find it. Keeps them busy.

My family loves to feed birds. We have bird feeders in our yard. We have a problem keeping squirrels off them. We don't want to spend money on those special feeders that spin, so we put up these cone-shaped baffles. If the squirrel tries to walk down the baffle, it is supposed to slide off. Somehow the squirrels keep getting to the feeders, and we don't know what to do about it. Please help??The best way to keep squirrels off bird feeders?
If you mount your bird feeder on top of a 4-5'; PVC pipe, you shouldn't have squirrel problems :) Of course, the pole has to be at least 5-6 feet tall. We have simple wood bird feeders on this type of pole and the squirrels cannot climb up - no need for fancy hoods or cones! We paint ours brown to blend with the surroundings but you could be creative and make them decorative as well. BTW - thanks for feeding the feathered friends!!

We bought special bird seed that had something hot (spicey) in it. I can't remember if it was crushed red peppers or not, but it was a special blend that squirrels didn't like. It worked. We had to give up filling the birdfeeders because it attracted too many little critters that our dogs were ';collecting'; for us. I miss the birds! Good luck.

My mom has a bird feeder that closes when squirrels or particularly large birds perch on it. (The perch has a spring mechanism that pulls the feeder hatch closed when anything heavy sits on it.) There are also things called squirrel deflectors. Check the link. How to keep squirrels away from bird feeders?
According to the website ';Better Lawns';, the article entitled ';Squirrel Chasers'; suggests using a mixture of garlic and dried blood around areas of your yard that may attract squirrels. Dried blood may be purchased in lawn and garden stores. It also suggests making a squirrel repellent by soaking several hot peppers in a quart of boiling water overnight. Add mild dish soap to the pepper water and use this mixture as a spray on garden plants. These mixtures should not be used in or around bird feeders, but making your yard and garden unpleasant for squirrels may help discourage them from making your yard and bird feeder part of their territory. There are also commercial repellents available. Ask about them at your local garden center.
I hung my bird feeder from the end of 10' piece of 1/2'; electrical conduit bent in the middle to a 45 degree angle and placed in a hole in a concrete base (from the base straight up, the off at 45, with a heavy wire stuck in the end to hang the bird feeder from. Never had squirrel problems because too small to grip, too steep, too high to leap. If the squirrels are coming down from the top, a cone shaped ';Chinese hat'; loosely mounted on the wire will tilt and dump them. If coming up from bottom a similar device - if they can't jump past it - or one of the spinning plates seems to work well. Some people put out corn on the cob to feed the squirrels away from the birds.
They get hungry to, put a squirrel feeder out for them. and grease the bird feeder pole. Use something like solid Crisco and grease the pole good. Then you can sit back and enjoy the squirrels trying to climb the pole. And it is safe for all ,The squirrels take the food and store it so they will not go hungry.
One of a squirrel's purposes in life is to get into your bird feeders. He has the time and opportunity to spend his whole day figuring it out. Squirrel proof bird feeders exist, but I don't know of any manufacturer that will guarantee 100% that a squirrel won't get in.
use a pole, like one youd hang plants from, and buy squirrel-proof bird feeders. its not 100% squirrel-proof, but it does help somewhat.
Try using fox or mountain lion urine (I'm serious) it'll keep the squirrels away, but not the birds.
Caiyan Pepper works wonders for this trick. The birds don't mind it but the squirrels do.
The mountain lion urine actually does work. I'm not sure where you could find it though.

This is a cheaper, more humane solution than squirrel-proof bird feeders, dogs, squirrel scarers, shotguns, poison, traps, and yelling ';get!'; everytime you see them. As squirrels stake out their territory, this feeder will not attract more squirrels; it will only feed the ones that already live there.

They make bird feeders that are squirrel proof. When the squirrel tries to eat, their weight causes the openings to close. If you go this route, make sure it is of good quality-squirrels are very determined and can destroy a cheaply made ';squirrel proof'; feeder. You can also put out a squirrel feeder-a wooden base with a spike in the middle upon which you put a dried corn ear. If you're feeding the birds, why leave out the squirrels? But this will not work very effectively if you continue to use a normal bird feeder.

I would suggest both, that's what we ended up doing!Does any one know how to stop the squirrels from eating from the bird feeder,?

There are many types of ';squirrel proof'; bird feeders, in a large variety of shapes. Many are designed to be hard for squirrels to reach. The best sort (IMO) are spring loaded, and if a squirrel (or even a really large bird) is on it, access to the food is cut off.

I moved my bird feeder and hung it under my porch the birds still come, but the squirrels will climb up the side of the porch and jump over and empty out all of the feed and then all the squirrels come and eat all of the food that is on the ground. How do you keep squirrels out of bird feeders?
I had a similar problem. A grey squirrel used to dangle from a branch and fall on my feeder, spilling food everywhere. Instead of moving the feeder I switched the type of seeds I used in the feeder. Safflower seed have a white coat and are bitter tasting to squirrels but songbirds still love it. At this moment a cardinal is feeding in my feeder. Since I switched seeds the squirrel has disappeared, probably to find better tasting food. Also some grackles have stopped visiting but they were little pigs that would empty my feeder every other day.

Safflower seed is widely available in stores with other bird feed. I buy mine at Lowe's. Plus, new bird seeds are also cheaper than a new bird feeder. How do you keep squirrels out of bird feeders?
I have my bird feeder hanging on a shepherd's hook in the middle of my back yard. I take Crisco and wipe it up and down the pole. You can also use regular cooking oil or the sprayable kind, like Pam. More than anything, I do this for my own entertainment. It's so funny watching the squirrels jump on the pole and slide down. Sometimes they keep trying to go up, with no success, and sometimes they just hold on and slide down. Either way, it's really funny.

Basically, I don't think there's much you can do unless you actually move your bird feeder. You can buy squirrel-proof bird feeders and you can buy things to hang over your bird feeder to try to keep squirrels out, but I'm not completely convinced anything really works.
Check your garden centers. Lows in my area sells a feeder that closes off the supply of seed when anything heavier than a bird sits on it. You can adjust the sensitivity.
YOU HAVE TO MOVE THE FEEDER .PUT IT IN A TREE .IF YOU GO TO A HARDWARE STORE THEY HAVE THESSE THINGS YOU PUT OVER THE TOP FEEDER THAT THE SQUIRLS CANT GET TO THE FOOD THEY ARE MADE OF ALUMANAM THE SQUIRLS SLIDE OFF OF THEM I AM SORRY I DONT KNOW THE NAME OF THEM BUT THEY WORK.......

Yes. It is called the Yankee Flipper.Check out Mark at www.backyardbirdcenterkc.com. He can hook you up.
That's really a great idea. I don't think I've seen or heard of anything like that. You should draw up one and seek a patent on it. You might have just solved the squirrel in the bird feeder problem.

    GREAT IDEA!
Hang a wide feeder with a thin wire from the top.

The squirrels cannot climb down the wire.

If they do, it becomes unbalanced and they fall off!

    Easy!!!!!!!!
Sorry haven't found the revolving bird feeder but I did find a powder in walmart that is for bird feeders that you put in the seed. Doesn't bother the birds but is an extreme eye irritant to the squirrels. Might try that in the mean time. I too have huge problems with the ground squirrels.

Anyone know a recipe for a suet feeding for squirrels using butter? I have the wire suet feeder?

Hmm...butter? That would probably melt or go rancid. Maybe you could use lard/shortening or even peanutbutter?

Here are a few recipes....you know that the squirrels will love anything intended for the birds ;)

By the way, if you can't find suet, you can use vegetable shortening.

    Soft Suet Medley

3/4 cup dried and fine ground meat (optional)

Melt suet in a saucepan over low heat.

Mix the rest of the ingredients together in a large bowl.

Allow the suet to cool until slightly thickened, then stir it into the mixture in the bowl. Mix thoroughly.

You can't use butter. Butter will melt at ROOM temperature -- outside, it'll be grease in seconds. Use lard or SHORTENING.

Does anyone have any ideas for keeping squirrels off my bird feeder? They eat everthing!?

put some aluminimum sheeting around the base of the tree or stand that the bird feeder is on, so that the squirrels slip and cant climb up it.

The sheeting will have to be at least 2ft wide.

.Does anyone have any ideas for keeping squirrels off my bird feeder? They eat everthing!?
Crisco...Grease the pole. They won't be able to climb up it.

My mother did this and it stopped.Does anyone have any ideas for keeping squirrels off my bird feeder? They eat everthing!?
You need a different kind of bird feeder that is squirrel proof. There are these ones with a circular thing around the outside that they can't stand on, they slip off.
Hang it from a nylon thread, like fishing wire.
Once a squirrel has located your bird feeder, it will become a regular dinner. You can do like the previous answerer suggested, but squirrels are very smart and can jump for long distances. You might want to purchase one of the squirrel proof feeders.

Squirrels can be almost as much fun to watch as birds. Once you get the bird feeder problem solved, you may want to put a squirrel feeder in the opposite part of your yard. Get one that makes them solve a problem to get to the treats, wait for them to discover the feeder and sit back and enjoy the shows.
don't you just love the birds and animals-we are warned not to feed animals and birds because you are calling in the pretty ones as well as the not so good ones, and to rid those pretty squirrels invite a hunter in or STOP FEEDING THE BIRDS. We are reminded daily of these problems you cant just have the ones you want and now squirrels, later mice, rabbits, snakes because they eat the mice.
Squirrels are smart little animals.. The best thing I have seen so far is place your bird feeder on a post, away from anything a squirrel could jump from-remember they can do amazing feats when it comes to food.. But anyway 4x4 post then use a metal cone just below the bird feeder. You can find these at Low es, Home Depot. Good Luck
Ever heard of a BB gun? Shoot one and hang him just right above the feeder. The birds wont mind.
Buy one of those feeders that has an opening wide enough for only a bird to get through.
I haven't seen a bird feeder yet that will keep those rodents off.
Amazing, aren't they? We watched a squirrel crawl upside-down down a feeder hanging wire, down the feeder and then pluck only the peanuts out of the food!

I found a good link - try their approach. You may need a new bird feeder or to add guards to your existing feeder.

Mix a little tabasco with some water, and wash out the area with a brush. The Squirrels hate it, but it doesnt harm them or bother the birds. This also keeps the squirrels away from garbage pailsHow do you keep squirrels out of your bird feeder without harming them?
Put an upside down cone on the pole that holds your bird feeder. The kind that dogs wear after being neutered. They wont be able to climb up it anymore.
To be honest with you I go ahead and feed the squirrel too. When I feed the squirrel he pretty much leaves my feeders alone.
Buy fancy squirrel shields from those mail order catalogs,... that is what my wife did.
There are special bird feeders which you can buy so the squirrels can't get at the food. Try a search on the google website.
There are squirrel proof bird feeders that you can buy, but squirrels usually find a way to get to them. The best thing to do is hang your feeder from a high branch with a long wire and make it impossible for them to reach it from anything. I have seen squirrels hang from thier toenails to get to birdfeeders. If you leave them a way they will find it. The bad thing is that if you let them eat the birdfood you will be overrun by squirrels before you know it.
    grease the pole
    uh.

Try using that thing people use to keep raccoons off trees.

It's where you take a long (and preferably wider than the squirrel) piece of sheet metal and wrap it into a tube around the tree. The last time I checked, squirrels couldn't climb smooth surfaces.

    or you can try this

    http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-Raccoons-off鈥?/a>
    Cayenne pepper.
    Buy a .410 shotgun.
Try tying a bag of mothballs to the pole. It doesn't bother the birds but it keeps the squirrels away. Make sure it's mesh material, like pantyhose
    look up yankee flipper
You can buy these special things at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. that are ';squirrel slingers';. Basically the weight of the squirrel will make the contraption spin the squirrel off. They dont hurt the squirrels, but get them quite frustrated...it's funny to watch
i think you should a. get some place that the squirrels can eat and a place for the birds to eat.

or b. when you a see a squirrel on the bird feed then run and scary them off.
Try putting a ceilling type thing on top of the bird featter

How do you deter squirrels away from your plants, party lights, bird feeder ?

    Squirrels HATE getting wet.

I have a Super Soaker. A couple of hard sprays and they're outta here.

Realize, tho', squirrels tend to have short memories, esp. when there's tasty birdseed to be had. You'll have to keep guard until just the sight of you at the window makes them run.

.How do you deter squirrels away from your plants, party lights, bird feeder ?
To deter squirrels away from plants you can pore some

household ammonia around them but not too close to the

plants itself as even the fumes can burn the plant. It will keep

cats away also as well as dogs away from garbage cans.

Pore a ring of ammonia around the feeder, out far enough

away so as not to interfere with the seeds on the ground.

4 or 5 feet out is ideal. If you are lucky you can watch as a

squirrel moves near, gets a whiff and suddenly turns and

runs like the devil is after it. Cats react differently. They turn

and run a short distance, stop and looks back and then sit

down and proceed to wash there face as if nothing at all

happened. Put a little something out for squirrels as well

and be assured they won't forget what it smells like over

there near the bird feeder. Love all the critters and good luck. How do you deter squirrels away from your plants, party lights, bird feeder ?
You can keep them out of your bird feeder by sprinkling capsiacin power into the bird food. This is the substance that makes chili peppers HOT ! Birds cannot taste it, so it will not effect them, but mammals will be repelled by it.

For the lights and plants they sell granulated animal repellent.

You can find both of these products at farm supply stores. If you cannot find the capsiacin, try using crushed hot chili peppers from the spice section of the supermarket!

    Good luck!
Shoot them. The more you shoot, the less squirrels that can reproduce. Remember these are animals who run infront of cars- their not too bright!

  • I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?

They make squirrel baffels that you can put on your bird feeder pole to keep them from climbing up from the bottom, however they are very resourceful and will look for other ways to get to the bird seed.

Feed your squirrels on the ground with some corn.I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
    Squirrels are a real problem.

The squirrel cones and baffles can keep them from climbing poles but they can jump than 6' up to get to something and sideways they can go even farther.I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
Navies all around the world use a sheet metal cone on the ropes holding the ships to the docks. Called ';rat guards';, these are tied to the ropes. The sheet metal cone could be pointed down as not to collect rain. Or an non hardening coal tar, black roof stuff, on the pole or stick.
Get a piece of PVC pipe that is almost as long as the pole. Remove the pole and slide the pipe over it and replace in the ground. PVC is slippery and they cannot climb it.
I tried cones, vaseline, baffels, tied bleach bottles all over the pole. Nothing seemed to stop the little buggers. So I bought one of those elongated bird feeders, made of plastic, covered with fine screening, that has 12 ports for birds to feed. I hung it from a shepherds hook and never had a squirrel get at the feeder all winter. They're out there but they didn't get my bird seed this time.
Here's what I did once. And, it worked.

First, I got a metal bowl (about 18'; in diameter) at Walmart - it was only a few bucks. Next, I cut a hole in the bottom of the bowl large enough for it to slip over the pole. I then slipped the bowl onto the pole such that it would hang upside down when secured to the pole. I then supported it from underneath with a hose clamp on the bottom of it (I had to wrap a bunch of black tape to form a wider spot on the pole than the hole in the bowl when the clamp was installed).

The idea was that the squirrel would climb up the pole and be stopped by the bowl. If he tried to reach out and climb up to the lip of the bowl, his weight would cause the bowl to tip. This sudden drop and change in level of the bowl would cause him to lose his grip and fall to the ground. The bowl would then return to its balanced position to fend off the next squirrel attempt.

If that isn't feasible to do, you can also get a 4- or 5-inch diameter PVC drain pipe (about 4 feet long) to surround the base of the pole. This is too wide for a squirrel to get his arms around and too slippery for him to dig his nails into. Keep in mind that squirrels do jump well. So, you should also make sure the bird feeder is a good distance away from plants, tree branches, or even walls (they can dig their nails into stucco and other siding materials, and jump to a bird feeder).

    Good luck.
put squirrel food on the ground level

    x
Put something like vaseline on the pole. Maybe that will stop them. I love them little squirrels but they do eat all the bird seed before the little birdies get any.
Make an inverted cone out of some sheet metal or plastic. It will keep then from climing the pole.

Will Cayenne Pepper hurt bird's. And will it keep the squirrel's out of the bird feeders?

I've used all sorts of different peppers. It didn't seem to hurt the birds or the squirrels. The squirrels just tried harder.

The best thing that I've found that works for me is placing a 5' length of guttering downspout over the birdfeeder pole. Let it remain loose around the pole so that it moves or makes noise when the squirrel tries to climb it. Also, rub vaseline all up on down the guttering and or birdfeeder pole. They can't get a grip on it. This has kept the squirrels out of my feeders for several years now. Also make sure your birdfeeder is several feet away from any tree branches that a squirrel may jump from. Will Cayenne Pepper hurt bird's. And will it keep the squirrel's out of the bird feeders?
no it won't because they won't eat it or touch itWill Cayenne Pepper hurt bird's. And will it keep the squirrel's out of the bird feeders?
cayenne pepper is bad as it contains monoxide sucrosen acids which are bad for plants!!! but animals like birds are immune to it and the squirrels too!! so get rid of that cayenne pepper!!!
no animal will go near a place where they get cayenne pepper on their nuts
I have tried all the suggestions, and I found the only thing that worked for me was squirrel proof feeders. And I have a separate feeder for them, the kind you put the corncob or whatever you want on.The pepper didn't work at all..... try the feeders, they have them pretty reasonable now at the stores.
Just feed the squirrels separately, use wood chunks or pine cones smother with peanut butter and roll in bird seed then hang them away from bird house. This works I do it.
Cayenne pepper can irritate the bird's eyes as it is shuffled around.

I bought a squirrel baffle at Home Depot (also available at Lowes, and super Walmart) that fits on any normal bird feeder pole. It costs about $12 and now the squirrels just walk on the ground and pick up the left over seed. It looks like a green 2 ft long over-sized can.

It helps to not have your feeder hanging from a tree. Keep it on a pole away from a tree.

The supplies are a bit of an investment. But it is worth th money you will save on feeding bird seed to the squirrels.

you can buy what looks like an upside down bowl at the wild bird store, you hook it above the feeder and it keeps squirrels from being able to jump onto the feeder. you can also suspend it in the middle of the yard from a long metal pole so the squirrels cant reach it.
Try putting Vaseline on the pole. Then when the squirrels try to climb it they slide down. It works perfectly and I always use it. It will not hurt them at all it just won't let them climb up.

I am a Buddhist, let me answer your question from Buddhist point of view. Buddhists believe in reincarnation after death. We may be another person or animal in our past life and after this life, dependig on our karma, we may be reborn either as another human being or animals, devils or achieve the ultimate eternity of Nirvana. As a lay man, it is quite inevitable for us not to kill an animal ( regardless of it's size ) but we try to avoid killing as much as possible not even an ant or mosquito. Animals are living creatures, they too have life just like human. Each time we kill an animal, we'll have a negative karma and after this life, it is our karma ( positive against negative ) that would determine our next destiny.
Yes, it's just trying to survive. Look at all the resources man has raided.
you could purchase a squirrel proof feeder

What is the best way to get squirrels to stop eating all of the bird food in my feeder?

The squirrels willnot stop eating all of my bird seed in the feeders and they also knock it down! Also if anyone know is there anyway to stop raccoons from doing the same thing. What is the best way to get squirrels to stop eating all of the bird food in my feeder?
Buy a squirrel proof bird feeder.

Many squirrel proof bird feeders use squirrel baffles to block squirrels from climbing up the bird feeder pole. Other hanging bird feeders use a different strategy. A mechanism is used that is sensitive to weight, so if something as heavy as a squirrel climbs on the bird feeder, the mechanism is activated and blocks the squirrel from eating the food. What is the best way to get squirrels to stop eating all of the bird food in my feeder?

We had a similar problem and solved it by hanging our 2 bird feeders (1 seed and 1 suet) from long, steel rods on the gutter of our garage. The rods we used were actually specialized plant stakes that we bent to add hooks at either end. They have a slick finish on them which the squirrels can't hold on to and the rods are about 30'; long - too long for squirrels to reach past. The feeders are too far from the ground for them to jump up.

We haven't had a single squirrel problem since doing this.
Here's the only ways that work.

    1. Hang the feeder from a sheppard's crook pole.

    2. Mount it on a greased metal pole.

    3. Use those large ugly metal cone things above and below the feeder. The top one must pivot.

That's it. Nothing else will work.
CAYENNE PEPPER WORS FOR ME.PUT IT IN THE BIRDSEED IT WIL NOT HARM THE BIRDS.PLUS KEEP THE FEEDERS AWAY FROM TREES
Cayenne pepper. Birds don't have taste buds as advanced as a squirrel. The squirrel will not eat seed covered in cayenne pepper but the birds will. Had this problem down in Texas and this is what was suggested to me and it worked. My squirrels were so bad they'd kill baby birds in order to eat the feed.

I cant recall how much I put per cup but it was enough so that each seed had some pepper on it. I think 1- 2 tablespoons per cup might have been what I used
You can buy what is referred to as a ';baffle'; from any feed store or store that sells bird feeders. It looks like a big metal tube and you can attach it to the pole that your feeder sits on. That way the squirels can't climp up. I've also heard of people greasing the poles but this has to be done every couple of weeks. If your feeder does not sit on a pole, just make sure it hangs far enough away from a tree where a squirel can jump on it.
    Shoot them!
Simple go get a BB gun.......thats what i do to them crazy birds......it works great give it a try..........thank you have a nice day...
Put the bird feeder where they can't get to it. You would need to put it up on a pole that is slippery and which they can't get a grip on (I'd suggest putting baby oil on it) or hang it from a looooooong string somewhere that won't be easily accessible for them. There are also certain types of bird feeders made that squirrels can't get into but birds can. Check your local feed store.
    BB gun
squirrel poison, i hope it doesn't kill the birds! =) just kidding i duno that's a good question, just put more food out, squirrels are cute too.
Hot pepper seasoning are good, but the best way that I've been able to deal with this is simply a squirrel proof feeder. It's designed to close whenever the little furballs step onto the feeding section and is double latched so that they can't get into it. Runs about $35-$45

Now ... with the raccoons ... I'm dealing with this problem for about a month now.

As of last week, the raccoon that we had, learned to open our squirrel proof feeders (double latch, and they worked on squirrels) which let it and the squirrel feast.

Two things seem to have worked. The first one partially, which is a squirrel and raccoon repellent. I found it at AGWAY (I think it can be purchased online) It worked for a day or two, then seemed to ease up. I'm not sure if the pollen count or rain effected it or if it just wears off.

The second thing I tried last weekend and that was the hot pepper. I actually went a step further than Cayenne and added Chili seasoning and white pepper. It seems to work so far on the back feeders ... I have one front feeder that I didn't 'season' because it's close to the road (thought the critter wouldn't go near it because of traffic) and saw the little furball hanging upside down on it last night, so I'll season that seed tonight.

    Hope this helps.
I had this problem. I put the feeder on a pole. The squirrels still got at it, so I greased the pole with Vaseline. That seems to be working.
